Neymar has officially confirmed that his glittering international career with Brazil has come to an end, bringing the curtain down on a 16-year journey in the famous yellow shirt.

The 34-year-old announced after previously hinting at retirement following Brazil’s shock Round of 16 exit to Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after Santos’ Copa Sudamericana victory on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Neymar insisted there would be no return to the Selecao.

“My moment with the Selecao has passed, it’s over. I’ve made history there, I’m very happy, I lived a lot of things there. I bled there, I gave my life as I always fought for the yellow shirt, but I don’t think I want it anymore,” Neymar said.

Neymar leaves as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer, having scored 80 goals in 130 international appearances while also providing 59 assists.

His only senior international trophy came in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, although he also captained Brazil to Olympic gold on home soil at the Rio 2016 Games.

His international career began in 2010 and included four FIFA World Cup appearances. Despite consistently being one of the world’s best players, World Cup glory eluded him, with injuries disrupting several campaigns.

Neymar’s final appearance for Brazil came during the World Cup defeat to Norway, where he came off the bench to score a late penalty in a 2-1 loss that ended the Selecao’s hopes of lifting a sixth world title.
