Ghanaian sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu could not secure a spot on the podium following underwhelming performances in the men’s 100m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Azamati finished seventh in the men’s 100m final, clocking 10.11 seconds to conclude an impressive sprint campaign, being the only Ghanaian to reach that stage.

Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme claimed the gold medal in dominant fashion, setting a Games Record (GR) and National Record (NR) of 9.83 seconds. Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy won silver with an Area Record (AR) and Personal Best (PB) of 9.85 seconds, while Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi took bronze in 9.90 seconds.

Meanwhile, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu missed out on a place in the men’s 100m final after clocking 10.06 seconds to finish third in his semi-final heat.

It was another disappointing outing for Ghana’s top sprinters, who have struggled to win medals in major athletics competitions despite high expectations.

They now join the list of Ghanaian athletes who have exited the Commonwealth Games without winning a medal, while others continue to compete to make the nation proud.

Despite these setbacks, it is worth noting that other athletes are excelling in their disciplines, with Zinabu Issah clinching a silver medal.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games are officially underway in Glasgow, running from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The event features around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing for 215 gold medals across 10 core sports.
