Ghanaian football coach, Laryea Kingston has expressed concern about the defensive tactical approach deployed by Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He acknowledged that although the approach helped Ghana survive the group stage, it is not sustainable heading into future tournaments.

The Uganda U17 coach noted that defending deep could be costly against all-out attacking teams with top players, urging Queiroz to adopt a more offensive approach.

“What we saw at the World Cup won’t help us going forward if we continue to defend deep all the time because football has changed. For me, Carlos did very well. His approach helped us because he was new and didn’t know the team very well. His biggest strength is his defensive organisation.

"If you don’t know a team well and try to make them attack immediately, you become vulnerable. Carlos has an attacking side to his football as well. If we give him two years, we should see that side of him,” he said in an exclusive interview with 3Sports.

The former Hearts of Oak player added that Ghanaian players naturally play with flair and want to express themselves on the pitch, hence Queiroz should adapt his tactics accordingly.

“When appointing a coach for Ghana, we must consider the type of players we have. Ghanaian players like to express themselves with the ball, so Carlos should adapt his approach,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has yet to officially announce whether the Portuguese manager will continue in his role or step aside for a new coach, as his short-term contract has expired.
