At least five people have sustained critical injuries following a road crash at the Asafo Labour Roundabout in Kumasi on Tuesday July 28, 2026.
The accident involved a Kia Rhino truck loaded with plantain and a commercial passenger vehicle.
According to eyewitnesses, the Kia Rhino developed a brake failure while descending from the Amakom direction.
The driver lost control and crashed into the commercial vehicle which was travelling from the Kejetia direction.
An eyewitness identified as Yaw Gabriel, who spoke to OTEC News, said the driver’s quick action prevented a worse outcome.
"The driver’s decision to swerve the truck prevented what could have been a far more devastating accident," he said.
The crash left five people, including some security personnel, critically injured.
They were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment.
Residents and traders described the scene as heartbreaking, as some victims were trapped inside the mangled commercial vehicle and had to be rescued after the driver’s side was cut open.
Personnel from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD, responded promptly to manage traffic and remove the damaged vehicles from the road.
The Manhyia MTTD Commander, DSP Docars Kyei Mensah, confirmed the incident and gave an update on the condition of victims.
"Five people are currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The driver of the commercial vehicle was initially in critical condition but is responding to treatment," she stated.
DSP Kyei Mensah added that "police have commenced investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash."
Meanwhile, market women from Aboabo Market gathered at the scene to salvage scattered plantain.
They believe the victims are fellow traders returning from Asante Akyem with consignments.
"The victims are traders from Aboabo Market," the women claimed.
The MTTD has urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to prevent similar incidents.
