The Bank of Ghana has joined the nation in mourning the death of Yaa-Naa Abukari II, King of Dagbon, describing him as a leader whose wisdom helped anchor peace and development in the country.

In a statement released on Monday, July 27, 2026, the central bank said it was deeply saddened by the passing of the monarch, whom it described as a revered custodian of culture, peace and unity.

The Bank credited the late king’s leadership with contributing immensely to Ghana’s stability, adding that his counsel would be greatly missed.

“His Majesty was a revered custodian of culture, peace and unity, and his leadership and wisdom contributed immensely to the stability and development of Ghana. His wise counsel and leadership will be greatly missed,” the statement read.

The Bank extended its condolences to the elders and people of Dagbon, as well as the bereaved royal family, and prayed for strength for the kingdom during the mourning period.

Yaa-Naa Abukari II, the 41st overlord of Dagbon, died after a short illness while receiving medical treatment in South Africa.

He was born in Mion in 1939 and rose from serving as chief of Savelugu to the Yendi throne in January 2019, ending a chieftaincy dispute that had left the skin vacant for 16 years following the 2002 killing of his predecessor.

His enskinment, which was the product of a peace process, was widely credited with restoring unity between Dagbon’s Abudu and Andani royal gates.
