Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to promoting every sporting discipline in Ghana, insisting that its mandate extends beyond football.

Speaking at the launch of a Ga Mantse tennis open tournament at the Ga Mantse Palace, Ampofo Ankrah said the project represents more than just a sporting event, describing it as the beginning of a movement that could shape the future of Ghanaian tennis.

"Traditionally, it's all about football, and some of us have been guilty of that," he admitted. "But when the king calls, you have to answer. This is a great initiative beyond just sports. It's a project, it's a movement, and it's life. Many of us, in years to come, will say we were part of the beginning of history."

The NSA Director-General stressed that the Authority should not be praised simply for making the Accra Sports Stadium available for tennis, explaining that facilitating all sports is one of its core responsibilities.

"One of our core mandates is to develop, organise, promote and manage sports. It is sports regardless of the discipline, and on this occasion it is tennis. We're more than happy to open our gates, our doors and our courts to tennis, which is also a very powerful sport globally," he said.

Ampofo Ankrah also highlighted tennis' global economic significance, noting that the sport ranks among the world's highest-paying disciplines.

"It would interest you to know that in terms of prize money, tennis ranks third only to golf and Formula One. People think it's football, but tennis is huge. So, we need to invest not just in the game but in our young girls and young boys who will be playing the game", Ampofo Ankrah added.
