Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has defended the government’s economic management, arguing that the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review shows a different approach from the previous administration under former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, Ayariga contrasted the policies of Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson with those of his predecessor.

"We were in this country, in this Parliament, and there was a Finance Minister who told us that he could not run this economy without taxing our mobile money transfers,” he said.

“Today, we have a Finance Minister who has abolished all those taxes, and yet he is successfully managing our economy. We have a Finance Minister who is not borrowing recklessly, but is successfully managing our economy,” he added.

Ayariga said Dr Forson had “given a good account of himself”, adding that the government’s policies had stabilised the economy while reducing the tax burden on Ghanaians.

He also contrasted the current administration’s spending priorities with those of the previous government.

“Today, we are investing in schools, roads and bridges instead of projects like the National Cathedral,” Ayariga said, adding that the Mid-Year Budget Review reflects increased investment in educational infrastructure, improvements to existing schools and major road projects across the country.
