Founder of A&C Mall, Dr Andrew Kwabena Asamoah, has recounted how he dismissed a driver who had worked for him for 17 years after discovering what he described as a fuel fraud scheme.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, he detailed how the driver continued purchasing the same amount of fuel every month even though he had been out of Ghana for three months.

Dr Asamoah further explained that fuel purchased for his vehicles was billed through a voucher system at the Total fuel station, attached to the A&C Mall.

However, upon his return to Ghana, he noticed that the fuel bill for his vehicles remained unusually high despite his three-month absence, prompting him to suspect that something was wrong.

"I had a driver who worked with me for about 17 years, and, you know, the Total fuel station is part of ANC, so when we buy fuel, we sign, then at the end of the month, you bring the bill, and we pay.

"I traveled to Geneva for three months. When I came back, I saw that even though I was not here, the amount of fuel he was buying was not possible. [The numbers] didn't make sense. How can you be buying the same fuel as if I am here? Does it make sense?

"I was not here, and you still buy the same fuel. Where were you going? So that one is dismissal,” he shared.

Dr Asamoah said that upon confrontation, the driver attempted to justify the fuel purchases by claiming he was using the fuel to warm up the vehicles.

"When I confronted him… He said, 'Oh, but you asked me to warm the cars'. I said, 'But you have always been warming the cars even when I am here. So, warming the cars alone, you have to buy fuel for ₵5,000 every month?'" he stated.

He further alleged that the driver had been approving the fuel vouchers himself instead of obtaining approval from his supervisor.

Additionally, he alleged that the driver had connived with a fuel attendant at the station to inflate the fuel amounts on the vouchers and shared the excess money between themselves.

“So, what they were doing is he collaborated with the fuel attendant. If they put ₵200, they write ₵1,000; then the ₵800, they share. Dismissal, and there is nothing to discuss,” he said.
