Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has indicated that Ghana has succeeded in earning credibility in international financial markets due to timely repayment of its debt.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson said the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations by making scheduled payment to bondholders on time has boosted its credibility on the global front.

"There was a time when the world doubted us. Today, every payment made on time answers that doubt, assuring bondholders in London, pension funds in New York and investors at home that our word is our bond," he told Parliament.

He said the government's disciplined approach to debt servicing was helping to rebuild investor confidence in Ghana's economy after years of financial distress.

"Payment after payment, coupon after coupon, Ghana is proving one thing beyond dispute: we now keep our word. We now keep our word. That is how market confidence is rebuilt—not through speeches but through repayment," Dr Forson stated.

He disclosed that since January 2025, the government had paid a total of US$2.1 billion in principal and interest to Eurobond holders without placing undue pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserves.

According to him, the renewed confidence from investors has translated into improved market conditions, with Ghana's borrowing costs falling significantly and Eurobond yields declining by about 300 basis points since the beginning of the year.

Dr Forson added that the improvements reflected the financial markets' endorsement of the government's fiscal discipline and prudent debt management, stressing that Ghana was regaining the trust of both international and domestic investors through consistent action.
