Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Ghanaian physician and cardiothoracic surgeon, has reflected on what he termed the unfinished legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

According to him, Ghana lost a unique opportunity for stability and ethical governance when his presidency ended prematurely.

Speaking at the 14th Commemorative Anniversary Lecture in honour of President Mills, on July 22, 2026, Prof Frimpong‑Boateng described Mills’ legacy as one defined by leadership, as well as servitude.

President Mills Behaved Like An Atheist – Frimpong-Boateng

He further noted that Mills’ tenure as the third president of the Fourth Republic was anchored in the rule of law and ethical governance.

"The legacy of Professor Mills is defined by peace, humility, integrity, transparency, stability, academic excellence, servant leadership, and more. His tenure as the third president of the Fourth Republic was anchored in the rule of law and ethical governance," he said.

To buttress his point, he noted that in the few years the late president served, he was able to accomplish the mandate given him to lead Ghana.

He therefore questioned what the state of the nation might have been had President Mills lived longer, describing him as a “mission‑accomplished” leader.

"It is good to remember what Professor Mills accomplished in the three and a half years that God gave him to serve Ghana. Yet, remembering what he stood for compels us to ask a more certain question:

"...What would have been the condition of Ghana today if President Mills had had the strength to complete his first term and most probably also served a second term?" he quizzed.
