TikTok, a social media platform created for users to produce and share short videos with their followers, has particularly become a popular channel to disseminate information including political communication.

The platform is increasingly being used by individuals to express their political views and comment on national issues, with some content gaining widespread attention due to emerging online trends.

However, some supporters and sympathisers of political parties have come under scrutiny after sharing posts deemed offensive, with some facing legal action.

'I will die for my party; God is my witness!' – Arrested TikToker declares

Within the past two to three months, four TikTok users affiliated with political parties have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service over videos they posted about high-profile personalities.

Here is a timeline of the four individuals who have been arrested over what they said.

Aminat Mahama, May 2026

The young woman was arrested on May 21, 2026, for allegedly making threats against President John Dramani Mahama in viral social media videos.

According to a police statement, the suspect was picked up following videos circulated on TikTok in which she allegedly made insulting remarks about the President and issued threats against his life.

“The IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) has arrested suspect Mahama Aminat, also known as Akosua Serwaa Minat, for offensive conduct and issuing threats against the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, in videos circulated on social media,” the statement said.

The police further stated that the videos also contained inciteful comments targeting the President and his wife.

“She was threatening the life of the President and inciting others to harm both the President and his wife,” the statement added.

She was taken to court and granted bail.

Camila Alhassan, July 2026

The police also arrested 43-year-old Camilla Alhassan for publishing false news and making offensive comments against the president.

She was arraigned in court and sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news.

The ruling was delivered on July 16, 2026, following her admission that she shared videos falsely alleging, without any evidence, that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general election.

Rita Konadu, July 2026

49-year-old Konadu, also known as "Mamaone" with the TikTok name the_onlymamaone1, was arrested by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) for allegedly making offensive and derogatory comments about President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama in a TikTok video.

She has since been granted bail by the court.

Prince Aboagye, July 2026

The 38-year-old NDC Branch Organiser for the Agona West was arrested and arraigned in court over alleged offensive remarks made against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The court, on Monday, July 20, 2026, admitted Aboagye to bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with three sureties, one of whom must justify the bond with landed property.

According to the Ghana Police Service, its attention was drawn on July 18, 2026, to a video circulating on TikTok in which Aboagye was allegedly seen and heard making offensive and insulting remarks against Dr Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Another TikToker arrested over alleged offensive comments about Mahama, First Lady

Following the circulation of the video, officers from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested the suspect on July 19, 2026, in connection with the matter.

Police said that during his caution statement, Aboagye admitted to making the statements contained in the viral video.

In the widely circulated video, Aboagye allegedly accused Dr Bawumia of serious criminal and personal misconduct, including murder, theft and engaging in extramarital affairs with married women.
