Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cited the position of the Trades Union Congress, TUC, in urging President John Dramani Mahama to withhold assent to the Tribunals Bill, 2026.

Speaking in a live video shared across social media, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer argued that concerns about the legislation extend beyond political parties.

“This is not a partisan request. The Trades Union Congress, the voice of millions of Ghanaian workers, has called for the bill to be withdrawn altogether, warning that in its current form, it could become a potent tool for weaponising justice delivery,” he said.

Dr Bawumia stressed that the concerns being raised should not be dismissed as partisan criticism.

“Those are the words of Ghanaian workers, not of any political party,” he added.

His comments come after Parliament approved the Tribunals Bill following its third reading. The legislation seeks to reintroduce tribunals under a revised legal framework aimed at strengthening the administration of justice and expanding access to legal remedies before it is sent to President Mahama for assent.

Dr Bawumia maintained that the concerns raised by organised labour should be taken into account before the President decides whether to sign the bill into law.
