Motorists travelling on the N6 Accra-Kumasi Highway are facing significant delays following a road crash involving a heavily loaded articulated truck at Birimso Bridge, which has completely blocked the road in both directions.
According to a report from the Ghana Police Service on its X handle, the incident, which occurred on the Saturday, July 18, 2026, has affected both Accra-bound and Kumasi-bound traffic on one of Ghana's busiest inter-regional routes.
The statement said officers from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) team based in Kibi have been deployed to the scene and have put in place temporary traffic diversions to ease the congestion.
Accra-bound motorists are being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam, while Kumasi-bound traffic is being redirected through Apedwa. Both diversions took effect from 10:00 a.m.
"There is a road crash at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway (Accra-Kumasi Highway), involving a heavily loaded articulated truck, resulting in a complete blockade of the road for Accra and Kumasi-bound traffic.
"Officers of the Eastern South Regional Mttd team from Kibi are at the scene, and have temporarily diverted the traffic through Kibi at Nsutam for Accra bound traffic, and at Apedwa, for Kumasi-bound traffic from 10 am, today 18/07/2026," the statement read.
The MTTD has urged all motorists and road users to cooperate with officers on the ground as work continues to clear the obstruction.
No details have been released on casualties or the extent of damage to the vehicle at the time of this report.
