Private legal practitioner Justice Abdulai has proposed expanding Ghana’s existing court system to handle corruption cases instead of creating new tribunals.

He said the country already has judicial structures that can be strengthened to deal with specialised cases.

“Why not use the same resources to strengthen what we already have?” he asked on TV3’s KeyPoints.

Abdulai suggested setting up dedicated circuit courts to hear corruption-related cases rather than establishing separate tribunals.

“If we want to fight corruption, why don’t we have expanded circuit courts dedicated solely to those cases?” he said.

He argued that improving existing institutions would be a more practical approach.

“You don’t need to reinvent the wheel when you have an existing wheel fit for purpose that can be expanded to achieve the same objective,” he stated.

Abdulai also said changing the name or structure of tribunals would not alter public perceptions of them.

“Changing the name, changing the clothes does not negate the history,” he said.
