Lawyer and Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has said Ghana does not need a tribunal system at this time, arguing that such bodies are susceptible to political interference.

Speaking on Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, July 18, Bentil said, “Tribunals are prone to political manipulation; we don’t need it at this time.”

His comments come as Parliament considers the proposed Tribunals Bill, 2026, which seeks to reintroduce public tribunals to operate alongside the country’s existing courts.

The bill aims to strengthen the administration of justice, improve access to justice and operationalise Article 126 of the 1992 Constitution, which provides for tribunals within Ghana’s judicial system.

The debate has also drawn criticism from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has called for the deletion of Clause 4 of the bill.

According to Afenyo-Markin, establishing district and regional tribunals would create a parallel justice system despite the existence of functioning courts across the country.

He argued that there was no justification for introducing additional judicial structures.
