The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun handing over new chip-embedded passports free of charge to victims of the June 29, 2026, floods whose travel documents were lost or damaged.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the commencement of the exercise in a Facebook post on Friday, July 17, 2026, saying it fulfils a pledge he made to support victims of the disaster.
"In keeping with my pledge, today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commenced handing over our new chip-embedded passports to victims of the recent devastating floods whose passports were either damaged or lost," Ablakwa said.
According to him, about 500 Ghanaians have so far contacted the ministry to benefit from the free replacement programme.
He said all beneficiaries underwent the necessary security, nationality, biometric and verification processes before receiving their new passports.
Ablakwa commended the ministry's Chief Director, Ambassador Khadijah Iddrisu, the Acting Director of Passports and other staff for efficiently implementing the humanitarian intervention.
Flood victims to receive free passports replacement within one week - Foreign Ministry
"I thank my Chief Director, Ambassador Khadijah Iddrisu, the Acting Director of Passports and colleagues at the ministry for efficiently executing this humanitarian intervention for our fellow citizens," he stated.
Describing the initiative as the ministry's contribution to the national recovery effort, the minister said the government remained committed to supporting victims affected by the floods.
"This is our Ministry's modest contribution to the national recovery effort. Our prayers, thoughts and actions are with all victims. We keep our promises," he added.
The initiative follows the devastating floods of June 29, 2026, which affected parts of Accra and surrounding communities after hours of torrential rainfall.
The floods claimed lives, displaced residents and destroyed homes, businesses and personal belongings, including important documents such as passports.
Following the disaster, Ablakwa pledged that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would replace, at no cost, passports that were lost or damaged in the floods.
