The editor of the Herald newspaper, Larry Alans-Dogbey, has reportedly been granted bail by the Accra High Court pending the hearing and determination of his appeal against a contempt of court conviction that sentenced him to seven days in prison.
According to a report by ghanapolitics.com, the ruling was delivered on Friday, July 17, 2026, by Justice Isaac Addo, who sits at the General Jurisdiction 4 Division of the High Court, in Suit No. GJ/0199/2025.
As part of the ruling, the court ordered that Alans-Dogbey remain on the same bail conditions imposed on June 26, 2026, a GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties, until the Court of Appeal determines his appeal against both the conviction and sentence.
According to the report, lawyer for the editor, Peter Okudzeto, who appeared alongside Eli Ahu and Stanley Boye-Quaye, told the court that the application for bail pending appeal was filed on July 6 and served on the respondent on July 9, 2026.
According to counsel, the respondent did not file any affidavit in opposition or any other response to the application.
Counsel for the respondent, Sean K. Poku, was absent when the case was called.
After considering the motion, the supporting affidavit and the attached exhibits, Justice Addo granted the application for bail pending appeal.
The Herald editor granted bail after contempt conviction
Background
Larry Alans-Dogbey was convicted of contempt on June 25, 2026, for allegedly breaching a court injunction that barred him from publishing statements deemed harmful to businessman Kevin Okyere's reputation.
He has appealed the conviction and seven-day jail sentence, arguing the injunction violated constitutional protections for press freedom, was unclear, and that his publications were based on official documents and made in the public interest.
He is seeking to have the conviction overturned or the custodial sentence replaced with a non-custodial penalty.
