President John Dramani Mahama has reacted to the several suits filed at the Supreme Court seeking an interpretation of the constitutional provisions on presidential term limits.

Addressing the issue for the first time at the Ho Technical University on Friday, July 17, 2026, President Mahama said Ghanaians gave him a mandate to serve one additional term and he is focused on fulfilling the promises he made to the people.

He said although some individuals have gone to the Supreme Court for clarity on the relevant constitutional clause, he believes the provision is clear.

“The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one term and I am working hard to meet the promises I made them… I know that people have gone to the Supreme Court seeking interpretation of the clause that governs the tenure of the president.

“If you ask my personal opinion, I thought that it was clear enough. Me, I've read it over several times. It's exactly what it says but if they want to ask the Supreme Court, that is their business,” he said.

President Mahama added that his priority remains delivering on the trust placed in him by Ghanaians.

“I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term and I'm going to work to meet the trust that they put in me,” he stated.

The president’s comments follow two separate suits filed at the apex court seeking an interpretation of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that a person cannot be elected as President of Ghana for more than two terms.

The two cases were filed separately by Ganiwu Alhassan, a teacher from Kpandai in the Northern Region, and Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper.

They are asking the Supreme Court to clarify the meaning of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution, particularly whether the two-term presidential limit applies only to consecutive terms or prevents a person who has already served two terms from seeking the presidency again.
