Former Chief Justice William Atuguba has paid an emotional tribute to the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and Environment Minister, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, describing them as principled and people-centred leaders whose deaths were a painful loss to Ghana.

Speaking at the Justice DF Annan Memorial Lecture on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Justice Atuguba said he struggled to understand why the two politicians had to die while serving the country.

"As I said, I can’t question God. I wish I could and if I could, why such a sterling man; I mean, two people, Omane Boamah and Murtala Mohammed, should perish like that?" he said.

Although he noted that he had never met either of the ministers personally, the former Chief Justice said he had followed their public service closely on social media and was impressed by the values they demonstrated.

"I've never known these people personally, but I follow things. I lost interest in Ghanaian TV, in what is worthwhile watching on TV, but of late, I follow things on social media, on my phone, and I decipher the trend of things from there," he stated.

Justice Atuguba said his observations convinced him that the late ministers stood out for their integrity and commitment to serving ordinary Ghanaians.

"It's from there that I've seen that these people were principled politicians, incorruptible, pro-people, but unfortunately..." he said, trailing off as he reflected on their passing.

His remarks formed part of tributes delivered during the Justice DF Annan Memorial Lecture, where speakers honoured the lives and contributions of the two ministers following their deaths, describing their passing as a significant loss to the nation.
