Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić was overcome with emotion after learning he had been selected to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

The unforgettable moment unfolded during FIFA's referee briefing, where a room full of elite match officials gathered in anticipation, each hoping to hear their name called for football's biggest fixture.

FIFA's Head of Refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, announced Vinčić as the official entrusted with Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium. As soon as his name was read out, the room erupted into applause, with fellow referees congratulating the Slovenian on achieving one of the sport's greatest honours.

Clearly overwhelmed, Vinčić bowed his head into his hands as tears flowed, struggling to contain his emotions after realising he would be taking charge of the World Cup final.
