An elderly woman has made an emotional appeal to the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Millicent Amankwaa Yeboah, to help her only grandson secure employment after his unsuccessful attempt to join the Ghana National Fire Service.

The woman, who was captured in a widely circulated video during the MP's constituency tour, recounted the sacrifices she made to support her grandson's dream of joining the security service.

According to her, she sold all the garden eggs she had cultivated and harvested for GH¢500 to finance her grandson's application after he completed university.

"I don't work, and I am also sick. My only grandson is all I have. The last time I harvested my garden eggs, I sold them and got GH¢500. We were told the Fire Service was recruiting, so I gave him the money to buy the forms and go through the recruitment process, but he was not selected. When I heard that you had come here, I wanted to see you. I just need work for my grandson," she said.

The elderly woman explained that despite her grandson's educational qualifications, he has been unable to secure a position in any of the security services. She therefore made a heartfelt appeal to the MP to assist him in finding employment.

Responding to the plea, Millicent Amankwaa Yeboah expressed sympathy for the woman but explained that recruitment into the security services is not entirely within the control of Members of Parliament.

She advised the young graduate to acquire a vocational skill or engage in productive work while waiting for another opportunity to pursue his dream career.

"Some of these recruitment processes do not pass through us, and even where there are protocol opportunities, they are very limited. For the meantime, I would advise him to learn a skill and work while he waits for another opportunity. Hopefully, things will work out," the MP said.
