Speaker Bagbin leads Ghana delegation to Qatar for former Emir's state funeral

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has arrived safely in Doha, Qatar, to attend the state funeral of the late former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Khalifa bin Al Thani.

According to a post shared on the official Facebook page of Parliament on July 15, 2026, the Speaker is leading a Ghanaian delegation to the funeral, which includes the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yussif, Sheikh Arimeyaw, representing the office of the National Chief Imam; as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament.

The Speaker was received upon arrival by officials of the Qatari government, Ghana’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mohammed Nurudeen, and officials of the Ghana Embassy in Doha.

The delegation is in Doha to join other international dignitaries in paying their last respects to the former Qatari leader.

Sheikh Hamad Khalifa bin Al Thani served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, during which he oversaw significant economic transformation and the country’s emergence as a major player in global affairs.

He passed away on July 13, 2026, at the age of 74.
