Former Chelsea teammates John Obi Mikel and Joe Cole found themselves in a heated exchange on during a podcast after disagreeing over suggestions that Argentina have benefited from favourable treatment on their road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The debate began when Cole argued that England should embrace an “us against the world” mentality ahead of their semifinal clash with Argentina, claiming there is a widespread feeling that many people want Lionel Messi to reach another World Cup final.

Cole stressed that he was not suggesting FIFA had fixed the tournament for Argentina, but insisted England must be prepared for Argentina’s gamesmanship.

He referenced the infamous 1998 World Cup incident involving David Beckham and Diego Simeone and predicted players such as Rodrigo De Paul would attempt to get under Jude Bellingham’s skin.

Mikel, however, strongly rejected any suggestion that Argentina’s path had been influenced by FIFA.

“Joe, please. That’s basically what you’re saying, that it’s fixed for Argentina. No, I don’t buy that,” Mikel responded.

The former Nigeria captain argued that accusations of favouritism were being driven largely by Cristiano Ronaldo supporters rather than facts.

“If the other teams had won their matches, Argentina would have faced tougher opponents. Argentina did their job, won their games and played their football. FIFA is not favouring Messi. Messi is doing his job, he plays, scores goals and breaks records,” Mikel added.

He concluded by backing Argentina’s chances of retaining the World Cup if they overcome England, insisting the defending champions have earned their place through performances on the pitch rather than outside influence.
