Some illegal miners have allegedly invaded River Supong at Domeabra, the only source of potable water for over 10 communities in the Ahafo Ano South District of the Ashanti Region.

They are also reported to have encroached on vast arable farmlands and river bodies with excavators and other mining equipment to the area.

OTEC News reporters Solomon Nimo and Kwame Agyenim Boateng who visited the area said the illegal miners had already surrounded the river and connected their pipes directly into it.

Residents fear that if the activity is not stopped immediately, it will completely destroy the river and deprive hundreds of residents of water for their daily chores.

Speaking to OTEC News on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, aggrieved residents alleged that some authorities in the area have turned a blind eye to the activities of the illegal miners, making it difficult to stop them.

"We fear not only the river bodies but our farmlands will be destroyed," a resident said.

They also revealed that the illegal miners have consistently evaded the National Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce, NAIMOS, raising suspicions of a possible collusion.

"We are humbly asking why these miners are able to hide their equipment anytime the task force visits the community. Is it the case that they get prior notice?" they quizzed.

Abusuapanin at Domeabra, Nana Agyenim Boateng Peprah, expressed worry over the situation and called on the Ashanti Regional Security Council to intervene.

He, however, warned that any individual who sells land to illegal miners will be fished out and prosecuted.

Residents are appealing to the government and security agencies to act urgently to save River Supong and protect livelihoods in the district.
