Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to take a more active role in promoting accountability and tackling corruption, stressing that Parliament's responsibility goes beyond passing laws.

According to him, lawmakers must ensure effective oversight of political financing and public institutions to protect Ghana's democratic system and strengthen public confidence in governance.

Bagbin made the remarks while addressing a regional conference on the financialisation of politics in Africa in Accra on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

He noted that while Parliament enacts laws and approves measures to generate state revenue, it also has a constitutional duty to ensure that public institutions entrusted with those resources remain accountable to the people.

"Parliament has a critical role in safeguarding democratic integrity and ensuring accountability in political financing. MPs have been given the power to ensure that the laws we pass, which call on people to pay taxes, are obeyed and taxes are paid, allowing us to generate revenue and deposit it into the BoG.

"The people expect us to hold that bank accountable. No institution of governance can say they are independent of Parliament," he stated.

The Speaker emphasised that passing anti-corruption laws alone is not enough, insisting that strict enforcement and effective implementation are essential to achieving meaningful results.

He also highlighted measures undertaken by Ghana's Parliament to strengthen its oversight mechanisms and promote transparency, ethical leadership, and accountability in public office.

Bagbin further urged African countries to deepen collaboration in addressing challenges associated with political financing, saying stronger partnerships would help improve governance, curb corruption, and restore public trust in democratic institutions.
