President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has called on lawyers to play a pivotal role in strengthening corporate governance, arguing that ethical standards and sustainable businesses hinge on strong legal oversight.

Speaking to the media during the 2026 Law Week celebration themed “Corporate Governance Rebooted: From Rules to Transformation,” Ghartey said good corporate governance remains one of the most important foundations for national development.

According to her, governments and systems may change, but institutions built on integrity, accountability and ethical leadership are more likely to endure changing seasons.

“Systems come and go, but if you maintain a good corporate governance culture, then you are sure that the systems will be ethical, have integrity, survive and deliver,” she said.

She stressed that lawyers serving on corporate boards must go beyond occupying positions and make meaningful contributions to governance and legal compliance.

“Their presence there should be felt. It’s not only about the fact that they are lawyers on the board, but that they are contributing constructively where the law is concerned and ensuring that these structures are maintained,” she stated.

The GBA President also underscored the need for continuous professional development, particularly for younger lawyers entrusted with leadership and governance responsibilities.

“Some of them have been given positions of trust, and so, they find themselves on these boards and have to contribute their quota,” she noted.

She encouraged experienced legal practitioners to mentor the next generation, saying stronger corporate governance would help build a more ethical and resilient Ghana.

“It’s good to share the experience. It’s good to encourage. We want Ghana to have a high consciousness of ethical business and want systems to be running,” she added.
