The Government of Ghana has expressed its condolences to the people of Dagbon following the death of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

In a statement issued by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Monday, July 13, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama extended his sympathies to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and Ghanaians, describing the late Yaa Naa as a traditional ruler whose leadership promoted peace and unity.

According to the government, the late Dagbon overlord played a key role in bringing healing and reconciliation to the kingdom after years of conflict.

“His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the late Yaa Naa's commitment to unity, stability and the welfare of his people helped create an environment for development in Dagbon and strengthened the relationship between traditional authorities and the government.

“His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the Government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana,” it added.

The government paid tribute to the late Yaa Naa's service to the nation and said his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation.

“May his wisdom, leadership, and dedication to peace continue to inspire future generations. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement said.

News of the Yaa Naa’s passing was announced on July 13, 2026.
