The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association (NCSSMA), Ghana, has called for the interdiction of a military officer captured in a widely circulated video showing a shooting during an anti-illegal mining operation at Kyebi Zongo.

In a press statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Association reiterated its opposition to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, stressing that it has consistently advocated for responsible, legal and sustainable small-scale mining practices across the country.

However, the Association expressed concern over the conduct of the military officer seen in the viral footage. According to the statement, based solely on what is visible in the video, the officer did not appear to be under an immediate threat that would justify the use of lethal force.

The NCSSMA noted that “the individual who was shot did not appear to be carrying a weapon or posing an imminent danger to the security personnel present.”

The Association further stated that the footage appears to show the firearm being discharged after the individual had already been pushed away by the soldier.

The statement also observed that “several armed military personnel were present at the scene, suggesting that the situation was under control.”

It added that the individual who was shot appeared to have been attempting to calm tensions and restrain members of the crowd rather than inciting violence. The Association, however, acknowledged that it would respect the findings of any official investigation if they establish a different sequence of events.

Calling for accountability, the NCSSMA urged the Ghana Armed Forces and the relevant state authorities to immediately interdict the officer involved while investigations are conducted. It argued that such a measure would help preserve public confidence in the investigative process and demonstrate the state's commitment to transparency and justice.

While reaffirming its support for government efforts to combat illegal mining, the Association emphasised that such operations must be carried out within the framework of the law, with full respect for human rights and established rules governing the use of force. It stressed that security personnel are expected to enforce the law professionally, proportionately and in accordance with constitutional principles.

The Association also referenced previous anti-galamsey operations in which lives have reportedly been lost under controversial circumstances. It cited the fatal shooting of a young man in Obuasi during an earlier operation, noting that community members and the victim's family had alleged he was unarmed and merely passing through the area when he was shot. According to the NCSSMA, such incidents highlight the need for thorough and independent investigations into all allegations involving the use of deadly force by security personnel.
