Gunshots were fired during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sekyere East Constituency executive elections in the Ashanti Region as chaos erupted on Saturday July 11, 2026.

During the elections at the voting centre, some men approached the venue while police officers were present and were seen moving towards the ballot box.

Among those present was media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, who was reportedly monitoring proceedings as he eyes the parliamentary seat.

The police officers appeared to approach the individuals to ascertain their intentions. Within seconds, a scuffle broke out as the officers clashed with them.

Okatakyie was quickly surrounded by security personnel and dragged out of the venue amid the chaos. Several gunshots were fired in an attempt to control the situation.

As the violence continued, more gunshots were fired, forcing the crowd to disperse. Police officers pursued those involved and reportedly made arrests, including Okatakyie Afrifa.

The media personality is seeking to contest as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency. It may be recalled that the NPP had earlier suspended its Constituency Executive Committee elections in Afigya Sekyere East and Asante Akyem Central in the Ashanti Region following court orders restraining the party from proceeding with the electoral process.

The directive was contained in a memorandum dated July 6, 2026, signed by Acting National Chairman Danquah Buttey Smith after a meeting of the party’s National Steering Committee.

The injunctions are to remain in force pending the determination of the respective applications before the courts or until further directives are issued.
