Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has argued that the government’s National General Clean-up Exercise is merely a symbolic effort that will not provide a lasting solution to Ghana’s sanitation and flooding challenges.

Speaking on Neat FM, A-Plus questioned the long-term impact of the exercise, explaining that in many areas where gutters are desilted, the debris is left along the drains.

According to him, when it rains, the waste is washed back into the gutters, causing them to become clogged again.

“The clean-up exercise is just being done for the sake of it. It won’t change anything. After the cleaning, what happens next? You go to places where gutters have been desilted, yet the debris is left beside them. When it rains again, the waste is washed back into the gutters,” he noted.

A-Plus also expressed concern about the possible outbreak of cholera following the devastating June 29 floods that affected parts of Accra.

While acknowledging that clean-up exercises and desilting of gutters are important, the Gomoa Central MP maintained that the initiative would have limited impact if underlying challenges remain unresolved, as the country could continue to experience severe flooding during heavy rainfall.

“We will get up and sweep, and that’s fine because we have to keep our environment clean. But can you honestly tell me that after sweeping, when it rains heavily again, the country won’t be flooded? Even so, everyone should get involved in the clean-up exercise to help keep the environment clean,” A-Plus said.

Touching on Ghana’s planning and development challenges, A-Plus called for stricter enforcement of land administration laws.

He argued that no one should be allowed to sell land unless a proper layout has been prepared, with roads and building plots clearly demarcated.

He further proposed that approved layouts should be a prerequisite before land documents are submitted to the Lands Commission for title registration, insisting that anyone who presents land for registration without an approved layout should be denied a land title.
