A senior nurse at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has shared the intense difficulties faced by staff in managing patients with severe behavioral and mental health conditions, including instances where patients chew on nearly half of their mattresses.
In an interview with journalists and shared on X on June 22, 2026, the nurse described the demanding nature of psychiatric care.
"We have patients who chew the mattresses they sleep on. They often create holes in the mattresses, and by the time staff notice, parts of the mattresses have already been damaged," she disclosed.
“Two patients are particularly known for this behaviour. It has become a major concern because the mattresses end up badly damaged, forcing them to sleep almost on bare floors,” she added.
“Imagine during this cold weather. If they are left sleeping almost on the bare floor, it doesn’t auger well for the patients’ health,” she added.
She also emphasised the resilience required to handle unpredictable and challenging behaviors involving these patients.
