The Government of Ghana has disclosed that it is repatriating a total of 327 Ghanaian nationals from La Côte d’Ivoire following a mass demolition exercise carried out by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality in Abidjan.
This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and confirmed in a statement from the Ministry on Friday, June 12, 2026.

According to the Ministry, the demolition exercise left the affected Ghanaians stranded after they lost their homes and sources of livelihood, making it difficult for them to remain in Côte d’Ivoire.
“The Government of Ghana is repatriating three hundred and twenty-seven (327) Ghanaians who were affected by the ongoing mass demolition exercise being undertaken by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire,” the Ministry stated.
It added that 228 of the affected nationals have already been brought back to Ghana safely following their arrival on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
“We are pleased to disclose that we have already facilitated the repatriation of two hundred and twenty-eight (228) Ghanaian nationals. These returnees arrived in Ghana yesterday, Thursday, 11th June, 2026,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry further stated that the remaining affected persons are expected to return home on Friday, June 12, 2026.
It also explained that transport arrangements were put in place to assist the return process.
“The Government of Ghana has provided buses and trucks to convey our nationals and their belongings free of charge back to Ghana safely,” it stated.
It also noted that discussions are ongoing with Ivorian authorities regarding compensation for the victims of the demolition exercise.
“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter…,” the statement added.
The Ministry said Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate efforts to ensure the affected persons receive the needed support.
“The Government of Ghana remains committed to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians and will intensify efforts to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful return and reintegration of the affected individuals.
