The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has praised Ghana's remarkable improvement in the latest World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, describing it as a significant milestone for media freedom in the country.

According to the index, Ghana climbed from 57th to 29th position globally and improved from 8th to 4th place in Africa.

Speaking at the GJA World Press Freedom Day 2026 Honours Night held in Accra, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour attributed the achievement to the dedication and resilience of journalists, media practitioners, and civil society organisations that continue to champion press freedom and democratic values in Ghana.

Dwumfour also commended President John Dramani Mahama for supporting initiatives that contributed to the country's improved ranking.

He further welcomed the government's proposal to establish a media development fund, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening the media landscape.

Despite the progress, the GJA President called on President Mahama to take a firmer and more consistent stance against attacks on journalists and violations of media freedom.

"While we commend the efforts, we respectfully urge His Excellency to continue speaking more strongly and consistently on issues concerning attacks on journalists, violations of media freedom, and abuses against media practitioners. He cannot remain a proud member without bringing this menace to an end," Dwumfour stated.

He stressed that sustaining Ghana's gains in press freedom would require continued commitment from both government and stakeholders to ensure the safety of journalists and uphold media independence.
