The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central Constituency, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has thrown his support behind the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, regarding his recent ruling on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Speaking on the matter, the Gomoa Central lawmaker maintained that the speaker’s decision should not be challenged or subjected to unnecessary criticism, given his vast experience and deep understanding of parliamentary procedures.

According to A-Plus, Speaker Bagbin has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his parliamentary career and deserves the confidence of both lawmakers and the public.

“He is the most experienced person when it comes to parliamentary affairs. Any decision he takes on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill should be accepted in good faith and respected by all,” he stated.

The MP noted that Speaker Bagbin’s successful stewardship of Ghana’s historic hung Parliament over the past four years is evidence of his competence and ability to navigate complex legislative matters.

“The man who successfully chaired a hung Parliament for four years is not someone whose judgment should be taken lightly. His decisions must be respected,” A Plus emphasised.

He further urged Members of Parliament to follow the Speaker’s guidance on the pending anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and avoid turning the issue into a partisan political battle.

According to him, matters of national importance such as the proposed legislation should be approached with maturity, objectivity, and a commitment to the national interest rather than political considerations.

A-Plus called on his colleagues across the political divide to work together and support any process outlined by the Speaker to ensure that Parliament handles the issue in accordance with established procedures and the law.

He stressed that Parliament’s credibility depends on lawmakers’ willingness to respect the authority of the Speaker and the institution’s rules.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill continues to generate intense public debate, with many Ghanaians closely watching developments in Parliament regarding its future. However, A Plus believes that adherence to parliamentary procedure and respect for the Speaker’s authority remain critical in resolving the matter.

He concluded by appealing to fellow legislators to put national interest above partisan politics and support efforts aimed at reaching an outcome that reflects the will of Parliament and the people of Ghana.
