Ghana were denied victory in Carlos Queiroz's first game in charge after Lewis Koumas scored deep into stoppage time to earn Wales a 1-1 draw in Cardiff on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The Black Stars appeared on course for a morale-boosting win in the final stages of preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after substitute Caleb Yirenkyi broke the deadlock in the second half. However, Wales responded in the dying moments to ensure the spoils were shared.

The home side controlled much of the opening period and created the better opportunities. Daniel James was Wales' biggest threat, causing problems throughout the first half with his pace and direct running.

The winger came close to opening the scoring on two occasions, first seeing a header pushed onto the post by Lawrence Ati-Zigi before rattling the crossbar moments later.

Ghana struggled to establish possession and were largely restricted to defending for long spells. Their best opportunity before the break came after a mistake by goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but Jordan Ayew was unable to capitalise.

The game opened up after the interval as Ghana showed greater attacking intent. Their breakthrough came from a swift counterattack, as Ernest Nuamah forced Darlow into a save. The rebound struck the post and fell kindly for Yirenkyi, who reacted quickest to convert from close range.

The goal sparked celebrations among the travelling Ghanaian supporters, who had created a lively atmosphere throughout the evening.

Despite falling behind, Wales continued to push forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off in the third minute of added time when Neco Williams delivered a dangerous cross into the box and Koumas stooped to head home his first senior international goal.

While the late equaliser was a disappointment for Ghana, the result ended a run of five consecutive defeats and provided an encouraging platform ahead of a World Cup campaign that begins later this month.
