We’re scared - Bolgatanga residents cry after dredging of dam stalls

Residents near the Tindonmolgo/Tindonsobligo Dam in the Bolgatanga Municipality are living in fear of floods as desiltation works on the dam, which started early this year, have been abandoned and equipment carted away.

Residents were greatly relieved when, in February, the Member of Parliament(MP) for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, in collaboration with the Bolgatanga District Roads Improvement Programme(DRIP) Coordinator, commenced work to desilt the dam to augment the volume of water it could retain and prevent floods.

But after doing some substantial work, the desiltation stopped and the DRIP equipment have been taken away, an indication that work may not resume soon.

“We thought they were going to complete everything. But after some time, the machines were taken away, leaving heaps of sand in the dam. We don’t know what’s happening,” a resident said in an interview with Mynewsgh.

Residents are calling on the MP to resume work on the dam and rid it of the mountains of silt left in the middle of the dam.

“Isaac Adongo is doing well but he can do better. I don’t know why he didn’t finish it but the rains have started and we could be in trouble,” another resident who pleaded anonymity noted.

The heavily silted dam is a significant source of water for domestic and commercial use in the municipality. But heaps of silt gathered during the desilting process remain uncollected in the middle of the dam.
