The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has sent a heartfelt goodwill message to Ghanaians returning from South Africa as government-led evacuation efforts officially get underway.
In an emotional message shared on Facebook on May 27, 2026, he assured the returning citizens of a warm reception back home as arrangements continue for their safe return to Ghana.
“Ghana wishes our cherished citizens a safe flight from South Africa. We cannot wait to warmly welcome you all to our beloved nation. Come, let’s celebrate Eid al-Adha together. We love our citizens. For God and Country,” he wrote.
The message comes amid growing concerns over renewed reports of attacks, intimidation, and hostility targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, forcing many migrants, including Ghanaians, to seek assistance to return home.
Government officials say the repatriation exercise forms part of efforts to protect the safety and well-being of Ghanaian citizens living abroad.
The evacuation process is being coordinated by Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Although the evacuation was initially expected to begin on May 21, 2026, authorities reportedly postponed the exercise after recording a surge in the number of Ghanaians seeking assistance to return home.
The latest development has sparked fresh conversations online about the safety of Ghanaians living in South Africa, particularly following recurring xenophobic tensions and attacks against foreign nationals over the years.
Many social media users have also praised the government’s decision to facilitate the return of affected citizens while calling for stronger protection measures for Ghanaians living abroad.
