The family of the taxi driver allegedly shot dead by a policewoman at Tetegu has threatened to sue the Ghana Police Service over the delay and unfulfilled promises.

Relatives of the deceased have accused the police of poor handling of the case involving Corporal Gifty Oppong for nearly three months since the shooting incident.

Their concerns were captured in a video shared by gossips24tv on Instagram on May 26, 2026, where the uncle of the deceased expressed disappointment over the slow progress of the case and the family’s inability to bury their relative.

The shooting incident happened on January 19, 2026, during an alleged confrontation between the taxi driver and the policewoman at Tetegu, near Weija in the Greater Accra Region.

However, despite several court appearances since the shooting, the family claims little progress has been made.

“What happened when we came to court was terrible. The family of the deceased showed up in court, but the prosecutor, the accused officer, and others did not show up,” the uncle of the deceased said.

In the video, he alleged that both the accused officer and the prosecutor failed to appear during a scheduled hearing, forcing the case to be adjourned once again to June 9, 2026, adding that repeated postponements are taking an emotional toll on them.

“They keep saying, ‘Come today, come tomorrow,’ but nothing is happening,” he added.

The video shows him threatening legal action against the entire Ghana Police Service, not just the officer involved. He warns that if the body decays in the morgue, they will not take this lightly.

"If they don't do what is right, the family will sue the Ghana Police," he stated angrily.

According to the uncle, the police initially requested a budget estimate for the burial shortly after the shooting and promised to support the family financially so they could bury the deceased, but months later, he claims the promise has not been fulfilled.

“After the incident, the police asked the family for a budget for the funeral and promised to help with the expenses so we could lay the body to rest. But they have not fulfilled any of it,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the family says the body remains at the morgue for more than five to six months after the killing due to the unresolved situation.

In the video, the uncle further alleged that the delays appear deliberate and accused the police service of trying to shield one of its own officers.

“The family is suffering. We cannot bury our relative properly, and it feels like the police are protecting their own and dragging the case out to frustrate us,” he said.

The family is now appealing to the public and relevant authorities to intervene to ensure justice is served and allow them to give the deceased a dignified burial.
