Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Vice Chairperson of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of lacking genuine commitment to passing the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on JoyNews on May 25, 2026, the MP said the government’s current posture shows it was never serious about advancing the legislation.
The reintroduced Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities and their promotion in Ghana.

The original version was passed by Parliament in February 2024 but was not signed into law before the end of the 8th Parliament.
The NDC, then in opposition, publicly backed the Bill and pledged to push it through if it won power.
According to Baffour Awuah, the issue was previously used as a political tool to win public support when national backing for the Bill was overwhelming.
“The commitment of the government is absent. It was just politics; it was just meant to carry Ghanaians along because, if you recall, there had been an Afrobarometer survey that said over 90 per cent of Ghanaians wanted the Bill passed, and so it was enough political market for them,” he said.
He further argued that the high public support made the Bill an attractive campaign message, but the lack of progress now shows a departure from those promises.
“Because if you have over 90 per cent of Ghanaians that want the Bill passed, and you sing their song, they are likely to come to your side politically,” he added.
Baffour Awuah said that the assurances made during the campaign were intended to secure electoral support; however noted that the government has not followed through on them since then.
“So in their desperation to win power, these are some of the things they stated, but clearly, just like many other issues on which they have disappointed Ghanaians, this is one of them,” he stated.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has urged lawmakers to expedite work on the reintroduced Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, calling for its fast-tracked consideration as part of ongoing parliamentary business.
