How Rawlings used an ex-soldier to bring down Bekwai's most feared killers

Late Jerry John Rawlings secretly used an informant to crack the Bekwai’s ritual murder case Late Jerry John Rawlings secretly used an informant to crack the Bekwai’s ritual murder case

The story of how young Kofi Kyinto was beheaded by his uncle nearly 40 years ago has been told by many people. However, one key aspect that is often left out is how Ghana’s late President, Jerry John Rawlings, together with an ex-serviceman, allegedly helped bring the killings in Bekwai to an end.

It may be recalled that GhanaWeb recently reported how 9-year-old Kofi Kyinto was allegedly beheaded for money rituals by his uncle, identified as Afi, alongside Kofi Nkrabea, popularly known as KG, as well as Jomo and Yaw Kwarteng.

Following the mysterious murder, one name repeatedly mentioned in the report was “Soldier”.

In a recent development, GhanaWeb has sighted a video recounting how “Soldier”, an ex-serviceman and alleged associate of Jerry John Rawlings, infiltrated the camp of the suspected killers under the guise of seeking employment from KG.

1980s Ritual Killings: How 9-year-old Kofi Kyinto was murdered for money rituals

“Rawlings sent one of his retired military friends to Sefwi Bekwai to look for a job at one of KG’s sawmill companies. But because he knew what he wanted, he immediately started washing KG’s car after arriving there.

“He would salute him and accord him maximum respect. So they started calling him ‘Soldier’. Eventually, KG became close to him and even involved him in his travels to Accra and other dealings,” the narrator said.

The narrator further explained that Soldier allegedly witnessed one of the killings but could not immediately report the incident due to a lack of evidence.

“The guy knew where KG slept and knew almost everything about him. He even witnessed one of the killings, but because he had no evidence, he let it slide,” he added.

Explaining how Kofi Kyinto’s murder eventually led to the arrest of KG, Yaw Kwarteng, Afi, and Jomo, the narrator claimed that the gang leader had travelled to Accra after the child was murdered.

According to him, Afi was expected to meet KG with the severed head. However, Yaw Kwarteng and Jomo allegedly planned to kill Afi as well to increase the amount of money they would receive.

The narrator added that Afi became suspicious of the plot after Yaw Kwarteng and Jomo mentioned Soldier’s name, causing him to flee with the head he was supposed to deliver to KG.

“Afi was supposed to meet KG with the head, but KG had travelled to Accra. So Jomo and Yaw Kwarteng planned to kill him too, so they could make more money. Bear in mind that in those days, a human head was allegedly sold for GH¢3 million.”

According to the narrator, events took a dramatic turn after Afi allegedly realised that his accomplices, Yaw Kwarteng and Jomo, were plotting against him.

His suspicion reportedly grew after the two men mentioned Soldier’s name during their discussions, leading Afi to believe they intended to have him arrested or eliminated.

Fearing for his life, Afi allegedly fled with the severed head he was supposed to deliver to KG. However, Soldier reportedly pursued him, retrieved the head, and quickly transported Afi to Sefwi Bekwai, where he kept him hidden in a vehicle while alerting authorities in Accra to arrest the rest of the group.

“But Afi became suspicious that they also wanted to kill him. When Kwarteng and Jomo mentioned Soldier’s name in the plan, Afi thought they wanted him arrested, so he started running away with the head. Soldier was fast enough to catch up with him and retrieve it.

“That was how Soldier quickly transported Afi to Sefwi Bekwai and kept him in a car while he sent word to Accra for KG and the rest of the group to be arrested. He feared that if he took him directly to the police station, he would be killed,” the narrator stated.

The narrator also recounted how KG, Afi, Jomo, and Yaw Kwarteng were reportedly executed by firing squad during the era of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

“After their arrest, they were brought back to Bekwai and executed by firing squad. Afterwards, soldiers warned residents not to organise funerals for them. JJ Rawlings was President at the time, and he ordered the firing squad,” he claimed.
