A resurfaced archival video capturing the historic transfer of power from former president Jerry John Rawlings to former President Hilla Limann has generated renewed interest in one of Ghana’s most significant political transitions.
The footage, which has been circulating on social media, offers a rare glimpse into a defining chapter of Ghana’s democratic and political evolution, in the moment Rawlings officially handed over power after a period of military rule.
In the video, Rawlings reflected on corruption and governance challenges that had plagued the country prior to his administration.
“During our short stay in power we have demonstrated openly what many people had only suspected before, namely that the holding of office in government in this country had in almost all cases been used to plunder the wealth of the nation. Ghana is looking up to you. Thank you,” Rawlings stated during the handover.
Why Rawlings was barred from Burma Camp under Kufuor
The resurfaced footage has since drawn attention from social media users of this generation who view it as an important reminder of Ghana’s political journey and democratic development.
The handover represented a key moment in Ghana’s return to constitutional rule following periods of military intervention in politics.
However, Ghana’s political landscape would later witness another dramatic turn when Rawlings led the December 31, 1981 coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Hilla Limann.
The coup resulted in the dissolution of Parliament, suspension of the Constitution, and the establishment of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) on January 1, 1982.
Rawlings would later transition from military leadership into democratic politics and eventually serve as President of Ghana under the Fourth Republic.
