Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured that no Ghanaian in South Africa who wants to return home will be left out of the planned evacuation exercise, after reports about a chartered flight were clarified.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, May 22, 2026, the Foreign Affairs Minister praised Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, for finding Sylvester Boakye, a Ghanaian who missed an updated evacuation notice and was the only person who went to O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, May 21.

Ablakwa said Boakye will still be part of the larger evacuation plan expected to help about 800 Ghanaians return home. He stressed that “no Ghanaian desirous of returning home would be left behind.”

He also denied reports that Boakye had already been flown back to Ghana, saying the information was false.

The minister explained that Ghana has not sent any chartered flight, and the evacuation was delayed after an agreement with South African authorities to fix legal and technical issues.

Ablakwa added that work is still ongoing to make sure the evacuation is well organised, saying, “Truth stands; and truth always wins.”
