Akandoh urges vigilance and safety protocols as Ebola outbreak affects parts of Africa

Following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of the Ebola outbreak as an international public health emergency, Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has urged the public to remain alert and observe preventive measures.

He advised the public to stay vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with the disease.

'No Ebola case recorded in Ghana' – Health Minister declares

Addressing the nation on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Akandoh said, “People experiencing symptoms such as sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding should immediately report to the nearest health facility.”

The minister stated that no Ebola cases had been recorded in West Africa, including Ghana, adding that the risk of an Ebola outbreak in the country remains low, but stressed the need for preventive measures.

He urged the public to practise proper hand hygiene by washing their hands regularly with soap under running water or using hand sanitisers.

“It is important to note that no cases have been recorded in West Africa, including our dear country, Ghana. However, it is said prevention is always better than cure,” he stated.

He also called on organisers of mass gatherings to provide handwashing stations and hand sanitisers to reduce any potential health risks.

“During mass gatherings, please also practise good hand hygiene and event organisers should provide hand washing stations and hand sanitisers,” he stressed.

Ebola is a viral disease spread through direct contact with infected blood, body fluids, secretions and contaminated surfaces or materials.
