'It's a man's world, but it's ruled by women' - Mary Anane Awuku

Respected Ghanaian entrepreneur and leadership development advocate Mary Anane Awuku has challenged the notion that leadership is dominated by men, insisting that women wield far more influence in society than is often acknowledged.

Awuku made the comments on The Career Trail programme aired on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, according to a report by adomonline.com on May 21, 2026.

“I have told myself that yes, people might say it’s a man’s world, but it’s ruled by women,” she said.

Awuku referenced a biblical analogy to support her point on influence and decision-making.

“When God created the world, He handed it over to Adam, right? And Eve came to tell Adam to do what God said he shouldn’t do. So, who was in control?” she asked.

She explained that women’s influence often extends beyond visible leadership positions.

“You can say you are the head, but if you are not careful, it will be ruled by a woman. That is how powerful women are,” she stated.

Awuku encouraged women to embrace their potential and confidence in whatever they set out to achieve.

“I want every woman to feel that power running through us, that if you put your mind to something, you can do it,” she urged.

She dismissed the idea that the world is strictly male-dominated, pointing to increasing female representation in leadership roles globally.

“There are a lot of countries that have opened doors for women to rule as presidents and heads of institutions,” she noted.

“I saw almost 100 women who are CEOs of organisations in the country,” she continued.

Awuku reiterated that women are increasingly excelling in entrepreneurship and leadership spaces.

“There are a lot of successful women entrepreneurs than even men,” she stated.

She clarified that her view is rooted in empowerment rather than controversy.
