Six Finals, Five Titles: Is Unai Emery the King of the Europa League?

Unai Emery has now won the Europa League on five occasions Unai Emery has now won the Europa League on five occasions

There was a time when Unai Emery’s European success was viewed as a coincidence, a specialist thriving in one competition while others dominated the bigger stages.

However, after guiding Aston Villa to victory over SC Freiburg in the 2026 Europa League final on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Spanish coach has now built a record that is becoming impossible to ignore.

Six Europa League finals, Five titles

No manager in the modern era has turned the competition into his personal territory quite like Emery.

His latest triumph with Aston Villa further strengthened a reputation that first began more than a decade ago with Sevilla FC.

Between 2014 and 2016, Emery led Sevilla to an extraordinary three consecutive Europa League titles, transforming the club into a revered European machine.

The first one came against Benfica in Turin after a tense penalty shootout.

A year later, Sevilla defeated Dnipro in a dramatic 3-2 final before dismantling Liverpool 3-1 in Basel in 2016 to complete a historic three-peat.

Many believed that the spell would remain the peak of Emery’s European career.

His later struggles at clubs like Arsenal, where he lost his first Europa League final and Paris Saint-Germain caused some to question whether he could reproduce that magic elsewhere.

Interestingly, it appears Europe always brings the best out of him.

In 2021, he returned to the Europa League with Villarreal CF and once again lifted the trophy after defeating Manchester United in one of the most unforgettable finals in the competition’s history.

Villarreal won 11-10 on penalties after every outfield player converted their spot-kick before goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli scored and saved to hand Emery his fourth crown.

Now, with Aston Villa, Emery has done it again.

Villa’s victory over Freiburg marked his fifth Europa League title in just six final appearances, an astonishing statistic in a competition known for its unpredictability.

Even more impressive is the variety of clubs with whom he has achieved success.

From Sevilla to Villarreal and now Aston Villa, Emery has repeatedly turned ambitious sides into continental winners.

The latest success also continues Aston Villa’s remarkable revival under the Spaniard.

When Emery arrived in Birmingham in October 2022, Villa were struggling in the lower half of the Premier League table. Less than four years later, they are European champions.

His tactical flexibility, obsessive preparation and calmness in knockout football have become defining features of his teams.

While other managers often view the Europa League as secondary, Emery treats it like a competition worthy of mastery.

And history now suggests he has mastered it better than anyone else.
