The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a clear and forceful signal to his party’s Minority Caucus in Parliament, stating that the period of internal recovery from the 2024 election defeat is over and that the party must now present itself to Ghana as a credible government-in-waiting.

Speaking at a pre-Parliament briefing with Minority MPs on the eve of the resumption of the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament, Dr Bawumia told the legislators that the country is watching closely and that the next phase of the NPP’s trajectory would be defined by how it conducts itself in the Chamber and beyond.

“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029,” he said.

Dr Bawumia was emphatic that the Minority must no longer see itself as a wounded party, but as a disciplined parliamentary force ready to lead.

He argued that from this session onward, every action taken in the House, every statement made to the press, and every engagement in constituencies must be guided by a single question in the minds of ordinary Ghanaians: “Can I trust the NPP to run my country again?”

A Party Rebuilding Its Mandate

The Flagbearer acknowledged that the NPP’s return to power in 2029 would not come easily and warned against complacency or fragmentation within the Caucus.

He reminded MPs of the party’s past achievements in government, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Senior High School policy, the School Feeding Programme, and the Youth Employment Programme, urging them to own and project that legacy with confidence.

“We must always project this posture that we are a party preparing to govern,” he said. “This will send a strong and meaningful message to the people of Ghana and emphasize our belief that it is only the NPP that can move this nation on a progressive path.”

Direct Support Pledge

Dr Bawumia also pledged to be personally and actively involved in supporting the Caucus to achieve its parliamentary objectives.

He disclosed that the broader party is building a strong institutional structure through sector committees to ensure that the NPP speaks with a unified and coordinated strategy at all times.

“I will be directly involved in supporting you to achieve this,” he said. “The entire party is also building a strong architecture through sector committees so that we speak with one voice and act with a coordinated strategy at every point in time.”

The address marks one of the Flagbearer’s most substantive engagements with the parliamentary wing of the party since winning the NPP presidential primary and is expected to set the tone for the Minority’s approach in the coming weeks and months.
