Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen, has expressed concern about what he describes as increasing intolerance toward dissenting opinions in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, the lawyer stated that the country’s future appears uncertain if people continue to face arrests over public comments and criticisms.
“The future is bleak for Ghana,” he said.
Obiri Boahen argued that legal and judicial ethics traditionally discourage individuals from presiding over matters in which they may have personal involvement or interest.
“It has been established that if anyone speaks against a lawyer, that same lawyer does not sit on the case,” he stated.
He referenced several incidents involving individuals who allegedly faced legal action or arrests after making public remarks, including content creators and political commentators.
“People are being arrested for just speaking up,” he claimed.
Questioning the current political direction of the country, Obiri Boahen criticised what he described as the misuse of power and warned that such actions could fuel political retaliation in the future.
“Is this what they call resetting?” he asked. “When the NPP comes back to power, they will retaliate. I cry for this country.”
The former NPP executive further described the political environment in Africa as harsh and unpredictable, stating that “Africa is a jungle.”
