President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is on track to stop receiving vaccine funding from GAVI by 2030.

According to him, Ghana’s stronger health systems and improved vaccine financing have put the country in a position to transition from a beneficiary of international vaccine support to a future donor.

He made the remarks during his speech at the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva on Monday, May 18, 2026.

He also announced this during a broader address on healthcare reforms, universal health coverage, and health sovereignty for African nations at the World Health Organisation (WHO) meeting.

“MahamaCares is ensuring that specialised, high-cost care is not a privilege for just a few but a right for all. Ghana, I am also happy to report, is on track to exit GAVI funding for vaccines by the year 2030, and we hope to transition into a donor in the not-too-distant future,” he said.

President Mahama also highlighted the MahamaCares initiative, which he said is improving access to specialised and expensive medical treatment for ordinary citizens.

GAVI, officially the Vaccine Alliance, is a global public-private partnership that helps low-income countries access life-saving vaccines. Over the years, it has supported Ghana’s immunisation programmes by financing vaccines for measles, polio, pneumococcal infections, rotavirus, yellow fever, and HPV, among others.

The alliance has also provided technical assistance and partnerships that have helped reduce childhood mortality and improve vaccine coverage in Ghana.

Under GAVI’s transition framework, countries whose economies and gross national incomes rise above set thresholds are gradually weaned off donor support and are expected to fund their national immunisation programmes independently.
