Government to evacuate 300 Ghanaians from SA amid xenophobic attacks

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a special evacuation arrangement for 300 Ghanaian nationals currently residing in South Africa, aimed at assisting citizens who wish to return home.

According to a post shared by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on social media on May 18, 2026, the designated departure point for the evacuation is OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

“The special chartered flight will depart South Africa on May 21, 2026, at 5:00 a.m. The evacuation airport is OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg,” the post stated.

Xenophobic Attacks: Government begins repatriation of Ghanaians in South Africa

The Ministry further disclosed that the evacuation exercise is fully funded by the government, with no cost to citizens being transported back home.

“The evacuation is a fully free service and forms part of efforts by the government to support affected nationals,” it noted.

The Ministry urged Ghanaians in South Africa who require further details or assistance to contact the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.

The exercise comes in the wake of xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa.
