The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has criticised the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for submitting a GH¢35.8 million reimbursement request to the Ministry of Finance without attaching supporting documents to justify the expenditure.
The amount was reportedly requested to cover the deployment of 6,000 police officers during the 2023 African Games hosted in Ghana.
During proceedings, members of the committee questioned officials from the ministry over the absence of documentation detailing how the funds were utilised, insisting that public spending must be backed by proper records and evidence.
The committee also expressed concern over an additional GH¢455,000 accommodation bill presented to the sports ministry for payment in relation to the games.
According to PAC members, no receipts, invoices, or relevant documents were attached to validate the claim.
Committee members stressed on the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, especially expenditures connected to major national events such as the African Games.
Officials from the sports ministry were directed to provide the necessary documentation to support the expenditures and clarify discrepancies raised during the hearing.
